Daily Bible Reading: 1 Kings 16 – 18

Verse of the Day: 1 Kings 18:38 – “Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.”

One of the great accounts of God showing up in the Old Testament. Elijah vs. the 450 prophets of Basal on Mount Carmel. Every time I read it, it gives me chills. Baal was the pagan god of storms and fertility. So the choice of God’s response is very appropriate.

After Elijah has stood in the gap for God before the evil King Ahab, God now sets up a “showdown” with the pagan religion in Israel. Now Elijah follows the plan that God has given him, and when he has, we read our verse above. “Then.” When we obey God and do things His way, we can trust Him to do His part to destroy the idols and sins in our lives.

Prayer: Today gracious Father, I come before you in humility and seek You and You alone. Cleanse me and use me. Amen.
