An Election Day Reminder for Believers

Text: Hebrews 13:8 (ESV) – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

I have this in my files, and believe it was from Dayspring 2016. I wanted to share it for today – a very divided and troubled Election in a very divided and troubled nation.

“As Christians, what can we do for election day? We can make prayer our first response and not our last resort. Take a look at these four ways we can remember to pray on election day.

1. We can pray for our government leaders.

Being a political leader is no small task; the power of politics is paid in stress. As we consider the responsibility of our leaders, let’s pray for wisdom, health, and safety. Paul reminded Timothy to pray for his leaders in 1 Timothy 2:1-2 ESV: First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

2. We can pray for wisdom for ourselves.

As Paul mentions in the verses above, Christians should long to reflect the love of Christ in our actions and opinions. When oppositional views are revealed, our responses should be spoken in loving kindness and truth. Doing this requires great wisdom that can only come from our heavenly Father. Asking the Lord to guide our hearts and mouths during this election season will enable our thoughts and replies to align with His ways.

3. We can pray for our nation as a whole.

To pray for our nation as a whole brings us together as Christians and this unity is critical. Pray that truth would be the source for every political choice and that Christians would unite our hearts in prayer on election day. Pray that the Truth of God’s Word would be the foundation of our nation and that hearts would turn to God as their guide. We can ask the Lord to help those who trust Him for eternal salvation to trust Him for everyday solutions, remembering Psalm 9:10 ESV: And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.

4. We can praise God that He knows every detail of this election and He is still in control.

As the Psalmist says in the verse above, God has not forgotten His people. His Word promises that He will not abandon us, but will be with us, no matter our governmental elections and their choices. For His steadfast love, we can praise Him for being the One worthy of our trust!

Let’s pray:

Dear Father, We know You are not surprised nor fearful any day and so You are no different on election day. We praise You for being the One worthy of our trust. Today we pray for wisdom for our leaders, for the discretion of Your people, and the unity of our country. No matter the election results, we long to acknowledge the truth of Your Word. May our worries rest in Your promises, may our thoughts be wrapped in Your steadfast love alone, and may our hearts be unified to further Your kingdom. Amen.”

The answer for our notion does not depend upon the White House, Congress, the Court House, or, the School House – the answer for our nation depends upon the Church House, and how we pray and seek God’s Face. We must humble ourselves, repent, and seek to serve Him. (2 Chronicles 7:14)
