The Gospel and the Kingdom - Matthew - Jesus Family Relationship

TEXT: Matthew 12:46-50 – 46 While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him. 47 Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.” 48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”

We pondered about Jesus’ and the Prophecy of His Heavenly Relationships and actions. Today, we finish this 12th chapter musing over His Relationship to His Families.

Matthew first addresses His earthly family in verses 46-47.

Jesus is told that His mother and brothers are waiting to meet with Him. We will see that He had earthly brothers and sisters – Matthew 13:55-56 says “Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?” Mary did not stay a virgin after the birth of Christ – she and Joseph were blessed with other children. Many believe that they may have come to take Him home – because of the conflict and trouble that seemed to surround Him.

When told they were out there waiting on Him, Jesus then addressed His eternal family in verses 48-50.

He says all who obey His heavenly Father are a part of His family!

That, my friends, means you and me today. Can be a part of His Family.  We often speak of the Church being the Family of God.

From our study yesterday we saw that Jesus is loved by the Father and filled with the Spirit. We see the embodiment of the Holy Trinity in Him. So in turn, His actions pointed out His love and provision for any who will just place their hope and trust in Him. And when we do, we are a part of God’s Eternal Family.

So, that leads to the question – are you a member of the family?
