TEXT: Matthew 13:47-52 – 47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind, 48 which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, 50 and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” 51 Jesus said to them, “Have you understood all these things?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” 52 Then He said to them, “Therefore every scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old.”
There are 8 total parables in this chapter. We will consider the last two today. The parable about the Sorting of the Fish and the Homeowner and His Treasure.
Starting with the sorting of the Fish, or as some call this the Dragnet ponder over
- The information in the parable given in verses 47-48 – upon catching a net filled with fish, the fishermen sort out the good from the bad.
- The interpretation of this parable in verses 49-50 – At the end of the world, the angels will separate the righteous from the wicked.
And in the last parable in Chapter 13, we read about the Homeowner and his Treasure (verse 52). Jesus says that a wise teacher of God’s Word can display both the old and new precious truths (Old and New Testament) like a homeowner can show off both old and new treasures. We are reminded to study and know (apply also) both the Old and New Testaments if we wish to draw close to God and acquire the Kingdom of Heaven.
We will conclude our study of this chapter tomorrow as we are
reminded the reason for the use of parables, and Jesus’ disciples' reaction to
them.
