"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Matthew 5:4 (CSB)
Jesus taught us how to interpret the Old Testament correctly. All of His
teachings can be found in the Old Testament. After all, He is the Author of
both. He would never contradict himself.
As we consider His telling us that we are blessed by mourning, He is
building upon what the Prophet Isaiah wrote about centuries earlier.
Look at Isaiah 61: 1-3:
“The Spirit of the Lord God is on me, because the Lord
has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the
brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the
prisoners;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s
favor, and the day of our God’s vengeance; to comfort all who mourn,
3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion; to give them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes, festive oil instead of mourning, and splendid clothes instead
of despair. And they will be called righteous trees, planted by the Lord to glorify him.”
This is recorded in the NT when
Jesus read the scroll in the Synagogue. (Luke 4:18). Jesus said that this was
fulfilled in their presence –
Poor
Brokenhearted
Captives
Bound
He brought comfort to the
mourners. He does the same today. He comes to set us free from the bondage of
sin, guilt, and brokenness. He can do this for you and me when we learn to
mourn over the sin in our lives.
Bring Him your brokenness in
mourning today, and watch what He can do.
