"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Matthew 5:4 (CSB)
So, how did the mourning go
yesterday? Did you seem to truly mourn over the sin in your life? Did you have
Godly sorrow? That is how we acquire the attitude correctly of mourning.
Godly sorrow.
Psalm 51 takes us through this
course of attitude development. David wrote this after Nathan confronted him
about his sin with Bathsheba and Uriah. (Look in your Bible to read this
penitent Psalm by one who had some major sins to confess).
Follow the map of his journey:
·
David goes to God seeking
His mercy – vs. 1-2
·
He confesses his sin
against God’s way – vs. 3-4
·
He recognizes his utter
dependence upon God – vs. 5-6 (Spiritually Bankrupt)
·
David seeks a threefold
correction to his attitude
o
Purge – vs. 7-9 (remove
completely)
o
Create – vs. 10-11 (make
new, not remodeled)
o
Restore – vs. 12-13 (complete
return to God)
·
Finishes by praying to have
the sin removed from him.
This ties in with God’s plan to
win the battle against pride that we saw in James 4: 7 -10.
·
Give in!
·
Get close!
·
Clean up!
· Get down!
We have an OT plan and NT plan
that is basically the same.
We want the right side up
attitude – we need to see our utter dependence on God both intellectually and
emotionally. With our head and our
heart. Knowing we are spiritually bankrupt and feeling the sorrow that goes
with this is vital.
Today – try mourning with true
Godly sorrow for your sinful state. See the difference it will make.
