TEXT: Luke 2:8 – “Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.”
Each of the symbols we see at Christmas can help us to discover and learn about the wonderful message of Christmas. They help us to return our focus to the true meaning of this season. God the Son stepped from eternity into time and space. He came to deliver mankind from the chains of sin, and He did this by taking on human flesh and dying for us. So let’s see what we can learn today –
Our symbol today is the Shepherds. What can we learn from this symbol?
Why might the shepherds be the first to be told about Jesus' birth? Shepherds were a lowly class of people, this reminds us that Jesus came for all mankind, not just the privileged. But we can also see some truths about shepherds.
First, Shepherds are faithful (Luke 2:8). They were in the fields, they were being faithful to the duty they held in protecting and providing for the sheep
Next, Shepherds are responsive (Luke 2:15) “So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” They did not hesitate – they went at once.
Finally, from that same verse we see the Shepherds were responsible (Luke 2:15) They had to do something about the message. They had been given a great honor and privilege in this pronouncement and they immediately did something about it.
When you see
Shepherds this Christmas – remember to be a faithful witness.
