The Gospel of the Kingdom - Matthew - Trusting - Part 2

TEXT:  MATTHEW 6: 25 – “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”

Now we are looking at the topic of the Kingdom and Trusting. Trusting is the opposite of Worrying. Let’s see what Jesus has to say about this. He starts with some information for us. We are told not to worry about food or clothes, for life consists of more than these.

Jesus makes a bold statement in saying do not worry about your life.

Some of us think, “ I know Jesus said it, but that’s impossible.” Does the fact that Jesus said these things mean that we shouldn’t eat or wear any clothes?

Of course not! Jesus is saying that we get so caught up and fret about what we are going to wear.

The Greek word translated do not worry here literally means “to be drawn in different directions.” I picture the old torture called "drawing and quartering."

Jesus wants us to understand that worry pulls us apart. People are pulled apart because we try to live our lives by depending on material wealth. Jesus was saying God has built into His Creation the means by which all things are cared for.

If you decided today “ I’m not going to worry,” many of you equate this with not taking action.

For example, if you said I’m not going to worry about what I will eat – what I will wear – my house, my job, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t fix you and the kids a meal or that you walk out the house naked or you don’t take care of your house or you just decide that’s it, I’m not going to work tomorrow.

No! No! No! Do not worry means that you stop fretting over your life – stop letting all the things in life consume and take over your mind. Jesus gives us information in this verse, then He goes on to illustrate this truth.

Tomorrow we will look at the illustration He gives in verses 26-30. We will follow that the next day with Jesus' Invitation in verses 31-34. We will finish the following day with a few concluding thoughts.

So, today – start the journey of a life free from worry. Take it a step at a time and see the difference what Jesus says will make in your life.
