The Gospel of the Kingdom - Matthew - Trusting - Part 4

TEXT:  MATTHEW 6: 26-30 –  Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?”

We are continuing to look at the topic of the Kingdom and Trusting. Trusting is the opposite of Worrying. Let’s see what Jesus has to say about this. He started with some information for us in verse 25. We are told not to worry about food or clothes, for life consists of more than these.

Jesus makes a bold statement in saying do not worry about your life. He gives us two illustrations, we saw the first one yesterday and we will see the second one today.

Consider the lilies. I believe that being the Master Teacher that He was, He used some good visual aids. I believe that a flock of birds may have flown overhead as He gave the illustration yesterday, and I believe that He pointed to a beautiful field of wildflowers as He spoke this illustration.

He is telling us that God will take care of our clothing. So don’t worry whether it’s Goodwill, Value City, Nautical, or Tommy Hilfiger – just be thankful that God is a God who cares and provides for all your needs.

God takes care of His little children.

We don’t have to worry because God provides for us. God feeds the birds and clothes the lilies. He will feed and clothe us.

It is our “little faith” that hinders Him from working as He would. He has great blessings for us if only we will yield to Him and live for the things which truly count.

You see, lilies grow from a deep root. The roots are where they belong, in the soil to receive nourishment.  The roots of believers are not to be in the material things of this earth. In order to receive their nourishment and fulfill their purpose on earth, believers are to put their roots where they belong, in God and His righteousness.

Who of you by worrying can change any situation in your life? It will not change the outcome, but it will change you!

Tomorrow, we will consider the invitation that Jesus offers any of us.

Put your cares into His hands – He can and will take care of them.
