Christmas Symbols - The Wisemen

TEXT:  Matthew 2:2  “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

Each of the symbols we see at Christmas can help us to discover and learn about the wonderful message of Christmas. They help us to return our focus on the true meaning for this season. God the Son stepped from eternity into time and space. He came to deliver mankind from the chains of sin, and He did this by taking on human flesh and dying for us. So let’s see what we can learn today –

The next symbol we will see is the Wisemen. What can we learn from this symbol?

We really don’t know how many Wisemen – tradition says it was three because of the gifts they brought. It was possibly many more because of the stir they created in Jerusalem.

Notice they followed the star – as we should shine for others to follow. They were diligent in their search for Christ (Verse 2). They took every possible opportunity to discover His location.

Also, they approached in the right manner – (Verse 11) – “And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him.” They recognized Him and fell down to ascribe worth to this young child.

They teach us to be unselfish in our gifts (Verse 11) – “And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” These were not inexpensive gifts – they were very extravagant.

When you see the Wisemen in the Manger Scenes remember that Wisemen of today still seek the Savior
