Christmas Symbols - The Star

TEXT:  Matthew 2:2  “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

Each of the symbols we see at Christmas can help us to discover and learn about the wonderful message of Christmas. They help us to return our focus on the true meaning for this season. God the Son stepped from eternity into time and space. He came to deliver mankind from the chains of sin, and He did this by taking on human flesh and dying for us. So let’s see what we can learn today –

The first symbol we will see is the Star. What can we learn from this symbol?

First, we must understand that this was not the big star, the bright star, the eastern star – but His star. Some celestial bodies give off light – like our Sun, while others reflect light – like our Moon.

Christ is like the Sun – we are like the Moon. Our light in this world is to be a reflection of His light. Jesus said – “I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12). We should shine the light of Jesus as that star did to draw people to Jesus.

That star did four things for the Wisemen –

  • ·      It gave direction – it guided them (Verse 9)
  • ·      It was a sign – it told them of a King (Verse 2)
  • ·      It pointed to the future – the baby would be a King (Verse 2)
  • ·      It gave encouragement – they rejoiced when they saw it. (Verse 10)

When you see the Star at Christmas remember to guide others to find Jesus.
