Only the wicked suffer - WRONG!

June 25

Daily Bible Reading: Job 4 – 6

Verse of the Day: Job 4:8 – “According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, And sow trouble, reap the same.”

We meet the first of the four friends in this chapter. Eliphaz. His name means – “God dispenses (judgment).” He comes from Teman, a region east of Idumea. He is the theologian of the group. He relies upon observation and experience for understanding all things. He is considerate, but still approaches Job with a strong philosophical approach. His basic argument is that if you sin – then you suffer.

His view of God is that He is righteous. In turn He punishes the wicked and blesses the good. So, as he talks with Job notice the underlying view that only the wicked suffer – and in turn since Job is suffering, He must be wicked. While Eliphaz may have some of the facts right, he has come to a false conclusion about Job.

Prayer: God help me see Your truth alone. Amen.
