Daily Bible Reading: Job 7 – 9
Verse of the Day: Job 4:8 – “For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, And apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out:”
In our readings today, we encounter the second of the four friends of Job. Bildad, whose name means “Son of Contention,” is called a Shuhite or the descendant of Shuah (a son of Abraham and Keturah). He is the historian or legalist of the group. He is argumentative and bases his observations upon tradition. He speaks as the voice of history as he approaches Job. He believes that Job must be sinning because he is suffering. From his depth of history he sees that the wicked always suffer.
Bildad’s view of God is that he is an immovable lawgiver and thus Job’s judge. If Job had not committed sin, God would not judge him, and he would not suffer because of his wickedness. Again, in Job’s case we know that this is not the case.
Prayer: Judge of all mankind, keep me from judging my fellow man today. Amen.
