Why do we suffer?

June 24

Daily Bible Reading: Job 1 – 3

Verse of the Day: Job 1:1 – “There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.”

It seems to be an ageless investigation – “Why do the righteous suffer?” We find ourselves asking this same question today. The Book of Job explores all the ancient Middle Eastern concepts of why this happens.

We can understand why someone suffers for their own wrong-doing – it is when it appears that one has done what is right and still suffers ---

In this Hebrew poetical drama (although it is a real incident), we see behind the scenes and get a view of Satan and his devices. Job faces four friends who instead of bringing comfort bring more pain. Let us consider how God allows this to take place for our benefit centuries later.

Prayer: God, open our eyes to Your Sovereignty in our lives. Amen.
