Willful and Woeful

May 11

Daily Bible Reading: 2 Kings 1 – 3

Verse of the Day: 2 Kings 1:1 - 2 – “And Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab. And Ahaziah fell down through the lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover of this sickness.”

Two verse into this book and we already see rebellion, spiritism, demonism, death, calamity – and it is just a preview of coming attractions. We witness the truth that persistent sin may be forgiven, but the consequences will not be erased. This book will show us the downward trend from compromise to calamity. The first 10 chapters show us Israel’s fall to Assyria (722 B.C.) and chapters 11 through 25 recounts Judah’s fall to Babylon (586 B.C.).

Prayer: Gracious and Merciful Father – as we read and meditate upon this book, help us to learn from them. Willful sin brings woeful consequences. Cleanse us now. Amen.
