Worshipping Youth

Daily Bible Reading: 1 Kings 12 – 13

Verse of the Day: 1 Kings 12:8 – “But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men that were grown up with him, that stood before him.”

We live in a culture that almost worships youth. As we age we seek to regain our youth, our health, our looks, our energy. And while there may not be anything totally wrong with this, we also tend to ignore the wisdom and advice of those who have aged.

In this account, we find that Rehoboam’s lack of discernment in listening to the advice from the elders set the stage for rebellion and the eventual division of the nation of Israel. We would do well to consider the lesson given, and to seriously listen to the advice from those who are our elders – and to then seek God’s Word to see what advice we should follow.

Prayer: Eternal Father, give me insight into the advice I receive. Help me discern the advice to take, and the advice to ignore. Amen.
