Daily Bible Reading: Hebrews 8

Verse of the Day: Hebrews 8:11 – “And they shall not teach every man his fellow-citizen,

And every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: For all shall know me, From the least to the greatest of them.”

This is part of a passage from Jeremiah 31 that the writer of Hebrews is quoting. In this, we find the word “know” used twice. In the Greek, two different words are used. The first “know” is the Greek word γνωθι. This means to know personally, it is an on-going knowledge which carries the concept of a personal relationship.

The second “know” is the Greek word ειδησουσιν. This one comes from a root word meaning “to see”, and means to perceive, experience, or to know absolutely. It suggests a complete knowledge of someone, while the first word carries the idea of a growing knowledge.

Prayer: Father, I thank You that I can have a complete knowledge of You based upon this growing knowledge of You in our relationship. I long to know You more and more each day.
