Law the Tutor

September 25

Daily Bible Reading: Galatians 3

Verse of the Day: Galatians 3:24 – 25 – “So that the law is become our tutor to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith is come, we are no longer under a tutor.”

The Greek word for tutor used here (παιδαγωγος) carried the meaning of a guardian and guide of boys. Among the Greeks and the Romans the name was applied to trustworthy slaves who were charged with the duty of supervising the life and morals of boys belonging to the better class. The boys were not allowed so much as to step out of the house without them before arriving at the age of manhood. We might call this person a schoolmaster or teacher.

The law acted as an outward check of desires so that our conscience of sin is more acute. Since we can’t deal with our own sin, the Law guides us to Christ, our rescuer and Savior.

Prayer: Savior, thank You for the Law that made me see the need I have for You.
