Tongues

September 4

Daily Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 14:1 – 20

Verse of the Day: 1 Corinthians 14:1 – 2 – “Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.”

One of the problems that the church at Corinth faced was the issue of “speaking in tongues.” It had apparently gotten out of context and out of hand. Paul now addresses this issue. The Greek word γλωσση means language, and thus a tongue. On the Day of Pentecost, the believers were given the ability to speak in languages that they did not know to be able to share the message of the gospel with visitors to Jerusalem. It was always a known language in its usage.

Paul will emphasize that the gift is used when there are those who can interpret what is said. If it is any value it must be an edifying action for those receiving it.

Prayer: Spirit, I do covet Your gifts, but I seek the most important one, Love. Grant me to use it in abundance daily. Amen.
