A how-to manual

August 19

Daily Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 1

Verse of the Day: 1 Corinthians 1:2 – “unto the church of God which is at Corinth, even them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, their Lord and ours:”

Corinth. A city whose name became a Greek verb because of their debauchery and vibrant lifestyle. It was fast and vile, yet rich and industrial. Into this wicked and vile city came Paul. I don’t believe any ministry has ever faced the challenges to survive as this one did, nor any church experience so much conflict.

In these 16 chapters, Paul emphasizes the need to develop a holy character even in the midst of strife and division. The first six chapters are in response to a report from Chloe, and the remaining chapters deal with specific questions from the Corinthian believers. Even with the very confrontational tone of the letter, Paul ends it with hope.

Prayer: Spirit of the Most Holy God, guide me to glean from this letter the vital truths of how to live a holy life at all times.
