Unity at all levels

August 18

Daily Bible Reading: Romans 16

Verse of the Day: Romans 16:21 – 23 – “Timothy my fellow-worker saluteth you; and Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen. I Tertius, who write the epistle, salute you in the Lord. Gaius my host, and of the whole church, saluteth you. Erastus the treasurer of the city saluteth you, and Quartus the brother.”

Paul had gone through a list of 26 people that he mentions by name in the longest list of greetings he has written. About one-third of these are women. Here we find a group of people who are sending their greetings along with Paul to that list.

What is interesting is this shows us that the early church was made up of all levels of society and all nationalities. In this list, we see the names of Tertuius and Quartus. These two are apparently slaves. They were given numerical names. Erastus is the treasure of the city. What a range of socio-economical levels of people all working in love and unity together. Do we see this today?

Prayer: Father, may we work in harmony and love with our brothers and sisters in Christ.
