The Apostle's Freedom

August 28

Daily Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 9

Verse of the Day: 1 Corinthians 9:19 – “For though I was free from all men, I brought myself under bondage to all, that I might gain the more.”

Continuing with his statements to the Corinthian Church that we looked at yesterday, Paul uses himself as an example to show that he followed what he taught.

Paul put his calling to minister to others above his own personal preferences. He was willing to conform to the customs of those he came in contact with (Greek, Jew, etc.) to bring them to Christ. To those under the Law (Jews) he sought to observe the Law. To those outside the Law (Gentiles) Paul did not observe Jewish customs. He went on to clarify this, unless someone misunderstood, in verse 21 he said he obeyed the law through obedience to Christ.

Being free was not a license to sin with others; it was the ability to be with them, yet stay pure in heart.

Prayer: Jesus, may I be available to others, yet remain true to You in all I do and say.
